Civics, Citizenship or Social Studies High School Graduation Requirements
Are there high school graduation requirement in civics or citizenship education? Social studies standards and curriculum guidelines are detailed in Oklahoma Administrative Code. (OAC §210:15-3)

Civics and government are included in the social studies core content areas. "The goal of civics and government is to develop informed, competent, and responsible citizens who are politically aware and active and committed to the fundamental values and principles of American constitutional democracy." Standard 13 in the United States Government course is: "The student will explain the rights, responsibilities, and benefits of citizenship in the United States, such as voting, jury duty, obedience to lawful authority, and private ownership of property." (Priority Academic Student Skills [PASS])

Civics, Citizenship or Social Studies Standards and Curriculum Frameworks
State standards include civics or citizenship education The Oklahoma Academic Standards for Social Studies (grade-level standards for PreK-8, course-specific standards for high school) include a strand of standards for Citizenship Literacy in PreK-3. Civics is embedded in the content in other grades and courses.

Sample standards/benchmarks include: exhibiting traits of good citizenship by recognizing the importance of rules and responsibilities as a member of a family, class and school (grade 1), analyzing the traits of good citizens by recognizing the sacrifices and contributions to American freedom by veterans and by reciting the social contract selection from the Declaration of Independence (grade 3), and evaluating the significance of civic participation in order to insure the preservation of constitutional government (high school, United States Government).

Curriculum frameworks include civics or citizenship education N/A. However, the Department of Education provides other instructional support materials including coherency storylines, assessment resources and social studies academic vocabulary sorted by grade. Social Studies Resources

Civics, Citizenship or Social Studies Inclusion in Assessment and Accountability Systems
State assessments include civics, citizenship education or social studies Criterion-referenced tests for third through eighth grade include grade five: "social studies, which shall consist of the history, Constitution and government of the United States, and geography," and grade eight "social studies, which shall consist of the history, Constitution, and government of the United States."

For the 2016-2017 school year, the Board shall administer assessments in United States History at least once between grades 9 and 12. Beginning with the 2017-2018 school year, the statewide student assessment system shall include assessments in United States History at least once between grades 9 and 12.

State statutes (laws) that address civics, citizenship education or social studies State law requires instruction on citizenship in the United States and the State of Oklahoma as well as the principles of democracy as they apply in the lives of citizens.

State Board of Education required to adopt subject matter standards including social studies. Standards should include instruction in civics, United States government, Oklahoma government, and history.

Board is also required to develop and administer criterion-referenced tests that include social studies. Tests should consist of history, Constitution and government of the United States, and geography.

Enhanced understanding of community and citizenship is one of the goals set forth in the Oklahoma Youth Community Services Act.
